Foods That Can Damage Our Oral Health

Cavities are the most common dental issue our patients face. These tiny holes in teeth happen when bacteria and acid eat away at the surface of the tooth. This is usually the result of poor oral hygiene. However, your food habits can also speed up tooth damage. This means there are certain foods that can damage your oral health. Here is a list of such foods and beverages:

  • Sugar

Sugar is one of the worst things our teeth are exposed to. Not only can sugar cause cavities, but it can also cause inflammation around the gums. This inflammation can cause gum disease or periodontal disease. Over time, this can lead to tooth loss. If you’re craving something sweet, try some fruit, which will provide other nutritional benefits as well.

  • Sticky candies

Sticky candies, like taffy, caramels, and gummies, aren’t good for your oral health, no matter how delicious they are. When you chew on them, they stay in your mouth for a long time, giving bacteria plenty of time to feast on them.

  • Dried fruit

Dried fruits (like raisins, apricots, and dates) are very sticky, and when eaten, they stick to the teeth. They form a sticky paste that is difficult to remove and causes plaque.

Dried fruit also contains a lot of sugar. Eating dried fruits can lead to cavities.

  • Starchy foods

Starchy foods – like chips, pretzels, and crackers – can be detrimental to your oral health. When these starchy foods mix with saliva, they break down into sugars more quickly. These sugars then feed oral bacteria, which can lead to tooth decay.

  • Sports drinks

The sugar in soft drinks, sports drinks, and energy drinks is directly linked to tooth decay. When sugar is consumed, the bacteria in the mouth turn that sugar into acid. The acid then wears away the enamel, causing tooth decay.

  • Tobacco

Tobacco in any form increases the risk of oral cancer, gum disease, tooth decay, and tooth loss. Chewing tobacco is a common cause of oral cancer, and cigarettes damage your gums and teeth. Over time, this can lead to tooth loss and problems with your jawbone. So, if you have the habit of using tobacco, stop it at the earliest.

  • Alcohol

Alcohol can cause your teeth to erode, leading to tooth decay. Alcohol can also dry out your mouth, which can contribute to bad breath.

  • Acidic Foods

Acidic foods and drinks can wear down the enamel that protects your teeth, leaving them vulnerable to decay. This is especially true if you consume acidic foods or drinks often.

  • Hard foods

Our teeth are not meant to withstand hard substances like ice or hard candy. When we bite into these substances, they chip away at our tooth enamel. Over time, this can lead to tooth decay.
